The Unitary Republic of Curnon has adopted a new Constitution, bringing an end to 156 days of martial law and beginning the process of restoring its elected government.
The Constitution was ratified on September 29, replacing the constitutional system which collapsed earlier this year. It establishes Curnon as a “Unitary, Democratic, and Sovereign Republic” and becomes the supreme law of the nation.
Promised 156 days ago
Martial law was declared on April 26 following political instability and concerns that Curnon’s existing laws were unable to deal with the situation. The Interim Government subsequently suspended national laws and government offices while work began on a replacement Constitution.
Viduna Galewelage, who worked on the new Constitution, said the crisis showed that Curnon’s legal system needed to be prepared for more than when everything was working normally.
“A Government must also account for the difficult days” he said, pointing to political instability, abuse of authority and unexpected circumstances as things the new system needed to handle.
Dan Pierce, Curnon’s former Prime Minister and current General Secretary, who helped write the new Constitution, described it as a “fresh start” for the nation.
“We now have a fresh opportunity to rebuild better than we ever have before” he said.
What happens now?
The new Constitution restores Parliament and provides for elected Prime Minister and MP positions, alongside protections for equality, freedom of expression, peaceful protest and freedom of association.
Curnon will now reopen citizenship applications before beginning its elections. Prime Minister elections are planned for October 13 to 18, followed by Parliamentary elections from October 19 to 23, with the new government expected to take office on October 24.
What has the Kora said?
The Kora of Vistaria, Hokoria and Lorc’h, Willow, has welcomed the return of democratic government in Curnon.
“I am delighted at the news that the Unitary Republic of Curnon’s new Constitution has come into force, restoring Curnon back to its glory” she said.
“Having been at Grand Premier Asa Ward’s side in the capacity of a citizen of Curnon, as a foreign leader and as a friend, I am most pleased to see everyone’s hard work has paid off”.
Hokoria and Curnon are close allies, with the Kora having remained involved with Curnon throughout the period of martial law. This relationship is expected to continue through Vistaria.
